Charities, take note of the 3rd paragraph.
Charity Commission publishes report on the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir Ltd – Released 14 May 2010
The Charity Commission has today published a regulatory case report into the charity the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir Ltd (registered charity no.1122809). The charity’s main activities are supporting and raising funds for a childcare foundation in Uganda. The concerns which led to the opening of the investigation related to whether the trustees had taken appropriate steps to safeguard volunteers at the foundation and the charity’s beneficiaries.
The Commission’s investigation examined the relationship between the charity and the foundation in order to establish the charity’s role and responsibility for the volunteering programme. It also looked at whether the charity trustees had ensured that there were appropriate safeguarding procedures in place for child members of the foundation’s choir, made up of pupils from the schools run by the foundation, when they visit the United Kingdom. The findings and conclusions of the Commission’s investigation are set out in the regulatory compliance report published today.
Charity Commission publishes report on the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir Ltd. Released 14th May 2010.
The Commission’s report also highlights issues for the wider sector on working with overseas partners. Whilst this is often an effective way of delivering benefits direct to a local community, charities should formalise relationships with local partners to avoid any misunderstanding of roles and responsibilities. However charities always remain responsible for ensuring the proper application of their charitable funds, carrying out due diligence, and putting in place appropriate and effective controls to monitor their own governance and activities and those of partner organisations to help identify any problems at an early stage.

This year the AfricaAdapt Innovation Fund is offering grants of up to US$6,000 to projects that seek to overcome barriers to share knowledge with ’hard-to-reach’ or marginalised African communities.

My name is Patricia Curmi and I am communications officer at AfricaAdapt (www.africa-adapt.net). We are launching our second AfricaAdapt innovation Fund aimed at African researchers, local and civil society organisations, cooperatives and community networks working on climate change adaptation and I am writing to ask if you could share this information with any people in your networks who might find it useful.

Important dates:
First round of submissions open 9 – 20 August, 2010.
Shortlisted applicants will be notified by 6 September, 2010.

How does the AfricaAdapt Innovation Fund work?
In 2009, the AfricaAdapt Innovation Fund helped nine African projects supporting climate change adaptation. These ranged from a community centre using multimedia in Lukwanga, Uganda, to the ‘Radio Citizen’ Club in Senegal.

This year the AfricaAdapt Innovation Fund is offering grants of up to US$6,000 to projects that seek to overcome barriers to share knowledge with ’hard-to-reach’ or marginalised African communities. These barriers may be related to language, access to information and marginalisation due to gender or disability. Theatre performances, songs, radio broadcasts, visual arts, videos and comics are just a few ideas about how they could be overcome. The key is to ensure these groups can learn and share.

More information about the fund, as well as the expression of Interest application form can be requested by contacted T4A.

That’s what the World of Difference programme is all about. For a volunteer of one of our member charities, Pepaids, it has been a dream come true.

Sasha - Pepaids volunteer

Sasha Kasthuriarachchi will be setting up the ‘Engage’ project, a volunteering programme that will encourage people in the UK and Zambia to work together whilst helping to educate Zambian communities to drive down poverty and the transmission of HIV.

It is a great achievement for her and Pepaids and all T4A members are delighted for them, not least because they hope to learn a thing or two from the Pepaids winning team. When their feet hit the ground again, they will let us have an insight in the kind of efforts it takes to beat over 2500 candidates. Well done guys !

An appropriate WORLDwrite film. “Watery but never wet, this compelling documentary promises to put aspirations for Western levels of water provision and sanitation on the map for developing countries. The film interweaves concerns about local water shortages, global water scarcity and toilet history with aspirations for grand projects and excellent loos. Eritrean refugee Tiba is at the centre of the film. Pontificating from her own bath full of bubbles Tiba considers everything from depleted aquifers to desalination to Livingstone’s plea not to flush. Tiba’s wet dream informs us pit latrines stink, while experts help flush the crap and remind us that water can never run out.” Check out the website too Flush It
